Dear Israel at Heart:This summer the Visitor Services division of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum welcomed three exceptional volunteers thanks to the generosity of Joey Low and Israel at Heart. The three- Mazal “Mali” Aklum, Mazal Yitzhak and Dvora Desta achieved celebrity status with staff and visitors, alike. Their warmth, poise and enthusiasm won them many new friends and admirers. Scholars, outreach specialists, educators and genocide prevention advocates all expressed their wish to meet the girls with the aim of involving them in some facet of their work. The Museum’s Historian for Global Initiatives even conducted an interview with one of the girls as part of our Voices on Antisemitism Initiative which is still featured on our website and can be viewed athttp://www.ushmm.org/museum/exhibit/focus/antisemitism//voices/transcript/?content=20091105 The Museum’s staff were riveted by the girls’ families fascinating life stories of escaping from Ethiopia and their efforts to preserve their heritage. Our Afro-American staff were particularly surprised to learn of the existence of Black Jews and there is no doubt that Mali, Mazel and Dvora were as much teachers as they were students. They are sorely missed. Jordan E. Tannenbaum Chief Development Officer 202.488.6181 United States Holocaust Memorial Museum 100 Raoul Wallenberg Place, S.W. Washington, D.C. 20024 www.ushmm.org |
